Enticing Edinburgh

This capital city is steeped in history and culture.

EDINBURGH IS A UNESCO World Heritage Site with medieval buildings dominating the Old Town and Georgian architecture characterising the New Town.

Edinburgh Castle is major landmark towering over the city on the rock of an extinct volcano. It was built in the twelfth century and came under siege on many occasions. Parts of it were rebuilt in the sixteenth century and alterations were made in the nineteenth century, so what stands today spans 800 years of changing architecture. In its grounds is St Margaret’s Chapel, which is thought to be the oldest building in the city, dating to the twelfth century. Today, visitors to Edinburgh Castle can step inside the Great Hall, see the State Rooms, the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and visit the National War Museum. Kids love exploring the nooks and crannies! Walk down the High Street from the castle to St Giles’ Cathedral, which has amazing architecture. Take a peek inside – it’s free! Continue along the street to the fifteenth century John Knox House, which is full of olde worlde charm. If you enjoy Tudor houses, you’ll love this place! Fancy a bit of culture? Visit the National Museum of Scotland for art, natural history, fashion, science and technology. Explore the Writers’ Museum to learn about some of Scotland’s greatest writers including Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Kids will love Dynamic Earth, a contemporary venue, with an interactive exhibition inside, where they can learn about our planet and the species that depend on it. Visit the Scottish National Gallery, Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Childhood, or the Edinburgh Dungeon for oodles more family fun!
